PRESS STATEMENT BY AM HERE TO LISTEN

The Am Here To Listen hereunder want to affirm the decision of the immediate meeting held specially today, that march to JCF must go ahead as scheduled on the 26th May 2010 at NU 3 Mdantsane after Church groups, a community policing forum (CPF) group and community organisations from Mdantsane on last Thursday gathered for prayer in support of a woman allegedly assaulted by Jesus Christ Family (JCF) church members last week. Today, in Daily Dispatch, its been reported that two homeless people have told of the horrors they’ve witnessed living in the bush at East London’s West Bank where a number of women have been murdered, sparking fears that a serial killer could be operating in the area. Seven women’s bodies and a human head have been found in a bushy area near the Mercedes-Benz South Africa plant in Nuffield Road in recent months.
This has been strengthening by continuous violation of human rights based to women and children in the Buffalo City Municipality. Last night, Friday the 21st May 2010, the brutal murder of the young woman in NU 2, Mdantsane by her boyfriend has shown that less is being done in addressing these concerned.

Even though the United Nations has taken drastic measures in 1993, recognizing the killing and domestic violation based to women and children, nothing much done by countries in protecting these Human Rights violation. Gender Equality has been outlined by our constitution and give protection for all, but in South Africa, each day the killing and violence based to women reports are alarming, giving this country a bad reflection to its young democracy. The organisation is no longer taking this as a violation of Human Rights alone, but it’s Political as more women are rising into power and women move away from second citizenship in the country. With notable concerns, Am Here To Listen, will continue by its legitimacy and any form of support required by women in this Province.

The organisation is still investigating allegations by Macibe community members, in Centane, former Transkei area where the Department of Health in this area is accused of refusing provision of family planning to women of the child bearing age due to an increase to number of HIV new infections and child birth rate in this area. The organisation believes that this is a constitutional mandate and women should not be chosen in accessing to Health Care either by the state or health professionals for their family planning. The state should explore every effort in preventing HIV and AIDS including campaigns that seek to promote and campaign for the elimination of new infections. South African Constitution gives a right to health care for all in the bill of rights and the right to choice for family planning. Such decision is not informed and based on the violation of human rights and dignity. The Am Here To Listen will make every efforts in opposing this decision.

The Am Here To Listen is also worried by the increase of smell of urine in every corner in the Butterworth Town. People in this town are dumping urine everywhere and this has increase number of urinated spots more than dumping in this municipality town. This is due to the fact that people are paying public toilets provided by the municipality as the results people are seeking for other efforts in relieving themselves as they cannot afford pay public toilets. If the municipality cannot make these toilets available for free, this will worsen chances of growth in the Butterworth Municipality. This is a bad reflection to women and children health care as this may affect them both direct and indirectly. And this violates a right to privacy to women who have to sit everywhere because of those who are making money out of the poor. The stance of the Am Here To Listen will continue to prevent any circumstances that seek to violate the rights of women and children. A letter of concerned will be written to the Town Clerk in raising these concerns. Majority of voters in this municipality are women and we say to all those that needs women votes for the coming Local Government Election, keep promises, including making public toilets accessible to all and improve standard of Health in Butterworth.

Since the inception of the organisation in October the 5th of October 2005, the number of people coming in this organisation for help is increasing and this is the sign that the end to women struggle for their liberation in this country is near end and men are still controlling women and recognizing them as the second layer leadership in their own country. The organisation pledges every institution to include women and children programs that seek to alert and end violence to women and children.

The organisation has branches where it assists abused women and children in rural areas and urban areas. And where there is no branch, it works with other NGOs with similar interests. These areas include Mdantsane, Kwelerha, Tsholomnqa, Ndevana, King William’s Town surroundings. Am Here to Listen is working closely with other government departments such as South African Police Services and other institutions like Ekhaya Foundation in Ndevana. Currently it needs national and international support to end women and children abuse, mobilizing and campaigning for access to justice by all.

Thank you
